Most NAD+ supplement listings are easy to compare on dose and difficult to compare on quality. A high purity percentage on a marketing page is not the same as a batch-specific certificate of analysis, and research on an ingredient is not automatically evidence for every finished product that contains it.
This guide therefore compares only claims that can be checked against a current label, a public lot-testing page, an independent certification, or a peer-reviewed human trial. We do not infer a parent company, launch date, manufacturing location, clinical effect, or monthly cost when the source does not establish it.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a redox coenzyme present in every cell. It powers mitochondrial ATP production via the electron-transport chain, fuels DNA-repair enzymes (PARPs), and is the obligatory substrate for sirtuins (SIRT1–SIRT7) — the enzyme family that controls gene expression, inflammation, and cellular survival.
NAD+ levels fall by 50% or more between ages 30 and 60. That decline is now considered a leading mechanistic explanation for age-related metabolic dysfunction, mitochondrial fatigue, accumulation of senescent cells, and the loss of muscle, skin, and cognitive resilience seen in aging.
NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) and NR (nicotinamide riboside) are the two NAD+ precursors with the strongest human data. Both raise NAD+ via the salvage pathway: NR is phosphorylated by NRK1/NRK2 to form NMN, then converted to NAD+; NMN is dephosphorylated to NR for cellular uptake or — per Imai's lab — taken up directly through the Slc12a8 transporter in mouse small intestine. NADH is the reduced electron-carrying form. Niacinamide (nicotinamide) and niacin (nicotinic acid) are cheaper but raise NAD+ less efficiently, and high-dose nicotinamide (>1 g/day) inhibits sirtuins.
CD38, an NAD+-degrading enzyme, rises with age. Inhibitors of CD38 — apigenin, quercetin, luteolin — preserve the NAD+ you make. Methylation cofactors (TMG, B12, folate) become depleted with high-dose precursor use because the body methylates excess nicotinamide for excretion.
Tru Niagen. The current product is a single-ingredient nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplement. Human trials of NR—including Martens et al. (2018)—support that oral NR can raise blood NAD+ in adults, but that result should not be read as proof of improved energy, sleep, cognition, or lifespan for an individual buyer. ChromaDex publishes extensive analytical standards information, but buyers should still look for finished-product or lot-specific documentation rather than treating a corporate testing program as a certificate for the bottle in hand.
Elysium Basis. Elysium's supplement-facts page verifies 250 mg NR chloride plus 50 mg pterostilbene per two-capsule serving. Its public lot-information page reports checks against internal specifications for active ingredients, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbiology. This is more useful than an unsupported “third-party tested” badge because the tested categories are named. The public page describes results against internal specifications, however, so it should not be presented as independent certification.
Thorne NiaCel 400. Thorne identifies its form as nicotinamide riboside malate. Thorne also states that the NR-malate product suite is NSF Certified for Sport and that batches are independently tested by NSF. That certification is relevant for label accuracy and screened contaminants/banned substances; it is not evidence that NiaCel improves longevity or performs better than another NR form.
NMN products. Yoshino et al. (2021) studied 250 mg/day NMN for 10 weeks in postmenopausal women with prediabetes and reported improved muscle insulin sensitivity. That narrow population and endpoint do not justify broad product claims. We found no basis for transferring the result to every branded NMN product, liposomal delivery claim, or “anti-aging” outcome. NMN's US regulatory status has also been disputed because of FDA's drug-exclusion interpretation; buyers should check current FDA materials rather than relying on a retailer's legal summary.
1. Confirm the chemical form and amount per serving on the Supplement Facts label.
2. Prefer a batch or lot number that maps to a dated report for identity, potency, heavy metals, microbes, and residual solvents.
3. Distinguish independent certification from a brand's internal specification. Both can be informative, but they are not equivalent.
4. Look for a named finished-product manufacturer or manufacturing standard. If a brand publishes only an ingredient supplier or says “made in a GMP facility” without an auditable certificate, record manufacturing as undisclosed.
5. Treat “liposomal,” “sublingual,” “pharmaceutical grade,” and “clinically proven” as unverified until the finished formulation and claimed outcome have direct supporting evidence.
Prices and promotions change too often for a hard-coded monthly ranking. On the day you buy, divide the purchase price by the number of labeled servings, then calculate cost per 300 mg of NR or 250 mg of NMN. Keep combination products separate: pterostilbene or other cofactors may affect price, but they do not make the precursor dose directly comparable.
Do not award a value premium for an unavailable COA, an unspecified “lab tested” claim, review count, bestseller badge, founder story, or an ingredient-level study. If two products provide the same documented dose, choose based on the stronger verifiable testing record, clearer manufacturing disclosure, and lower current cost—not projected health benefits.
NR and NMN trials primarily establish changes in NAD-related biomarkers and a limited number of population-specific outcomes. They do not establish that one retail brand extends lifespan, and there are no direct head-to-head trials supporting a universal brand winner. Consult a clinician before use if you are pregnant, nursing, managing a medical condition, or taking medication.
Does a 99% purity claim prove an NMN product is high quality?
No. The claim is useful only when tied to the current batch and a report that identifies the laboratory, method, sample, date, and result. It also does not cover contaminants or dose accuracy unless those were tested.
Is NSF Certified for Sport the same as clinical proof?
No. Certification addresses product testing and sports-related screening. Clinical proof requires trials of the relevant formulation and health outcome.
Which is better, NMN or NR?
Both are NAD+ precursors with human data, but the studies differ in populations, doses, and endpoints. Product quality and regulatory context can be compared; current evidence does not support a universal winner for longevity.
How often should I re-check a brand?
Check the label, lot documentation, certification status, and current price each time the formulation or package changes. Do not assume an older review still describes the product being sold.
