How this estimate works

Sleep goal: 300 mg elemental magnesium as glycinate about 1 hour before bed. Brain goal: 2,000 mg magnesium L-threonate compound (~144 mg elemental), split as 1,000 mg morning and evening. Blood-pressure/general goal: 300 mg elemental with dinner. Supplemental elemental magnesium has a 350 mg/day NIH upper limit; higher supplemental amounts mainly increase loose stools. Dietary RDA is 400–420 mg/day for men, 310–320 mg/day for women, and 350–360 mg/day in pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator show elemental magnesium?

Sleep and blood-pressure options show elemental magnesium. The brain option shows the L-threonate compound amount and its approximate elemental amount separately.

What is the supplemental upper limit?

The NIH upper limit for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg/day of elemental magnesium for adults; it does not include magnesium from food.

Should I take magnesium with medicines?

Magnesium can reduce absorption of some medicines. Keep the spacing specified by your prescription and ask a pharmacist about antibiotics, bisphosphonates or levothyroxine.
